PERIODONTAL CARE

Periodontal (Gum) disease is a very common disease and most of us are affected by one or other form of it. Ranging from a simple inflammation in the gum to a serious problem, the severity of gum disease varies. Dr. Rasika’s Dental Wellness Centre provides both periodontal care and periodontists treatment in Pune.

Periodontal care and treatment is necessary for healthier teeth. The term ‘periodontal’ defines the area around the teeth. This includes the bone and the soft tissues that hold the tooth in its place. If these areas are affected then it may lead to loss of teeth. In Periodontal dentistry, treatment methods are adopted to prevent tooth loss and if unavoidable, dental implants and other surgical related procedures like grafting are recommended.

General risk factors associated with gum disease are:

  • Age factor.
  • Smoking.
  • Tobacco use.
  • Genetics.
  • Side effects of few medications.
  • Diabetic and cardiovascular disease patients.

It is always better to know about periodontal disease and the available treatment options for it. The most common gum diseases are Gingivitis and Periodontitis.

Gingivitis –

Inflammation of the gums because of bacterial infection leads to gingivitis. This inflammation is caused mainly because of plaque and tartar that accumulates on the teeth that are not removed for a long period. This also paves way to bleeding in the gums. Gingivitis is generally a mild form of infection which can be addressed with cleaning, flossing, and a visit to a dentist.

Periodontitis –

This is a serious issue. Periodontitis is an advanced form of Gingivitis. This infection affects bones around the teeth and also the soft tissues. Gums may pull away from teeth creating pockets because of infection. This can result in loss of teeth and in some cases, serious health issue may also arise.

Though good oral hygiene along with regular visit to a dentist may prevent the disease, treatment procedures are also available if problems have occurred. Both surgical and non surgical treatments are practiced for periodontal disease.

Non –Surgical Procedures:

  • Scaling and root planning – Thorough removal of plaque by cleaning root surfaces and removal of tartar from deep pockets.
  • Oral or topical antibiotics – Prescribed to control bacterial infections. Mouth rinses or gels may also be prescribed to control infection.

Surgical Treatments:

  • Pocket reduction surgery.
  • Soft tissue grafts.
  • Bone grafts.
  • Guided tissue regeneration.
  • Bone surgery.

The above are some surgical options that your Periodontist decides after proper examination and evaluations. If the basic scaling and root planning addresses the problem, then surgical options are not necessary. The main aim of the treatment is to bring back the dental health to normalcy by treating the pockets that are created due to infection and through regenerative surgeries.

It is always better to visit the dentist immediately when symptoms like bad breath, red, swollen or bleeding gums, experiencing pain while chewing, receding gum line, and if any sensitivity is noticed. Preventive treatment is always better than treating complicated stages.
